HBC Construction starts £18 million Dewsbury Market redevelopment

HBC Construction has officially started work on the £18 million redevelopment of Dewsbury Market. The project will transform the historic venue into a modern, multifunctional space for the West Yorkshire town. Construction is expected to finish in early 2028, and the revitalised market and surrounding public spaces will open shortly afterwards.

Part of the Dewsbury Blueprint programme

The scheme forms part of Kirklees Council’s wider Dewsbury Blueprint programme. The refurbishment builds on the market’s proud heritage. It also aims to attract more visitors, businesses and investment into the town centre. For a town looking to strengthen its retail and leisure offer, the market sits at the heart of that ambition.

Cllr Hardie, cabinet member for regeneration, highways and transport, stated: “This is an important moment for Dewsbury. The market is part of the town’s identity, and this investment protects that heritage while creating a space that works for today and for generations to come.

“Alongside the Arcade and other improvements across Dewsbury, this is about creating a town centre with a bright future, supporting local businesses and giving residents and visitors even more reasons to spend time here.”

Restoring the historic market hall

The project will sensitively restore the historic market hall. The work will preserve and enhance its iconic glazed roof structure and distinctive metal architecture. These features give the building its character, so protecting them is central to the scheme.

Inside, the redevelopment will deliver a significantly enhanced day-to-night market experience. Visitors will find more reasons to stay from the daytime into the evening.

Outside, a new outdoor events space and town park will add to the offer. The park will include a children’s play area, water fountains, extensive planting and local artwork. Together, these improvements will create an open, accessible and family-friendly destination. People will be able to shop, socialise and spend time in the heart of Dewsbury.

What the redevelopment means for the town centre

Market halls have long played a central role in northern town centres. A restored building with a flexible events space and a public park can draw people in for far more than a weekly shop. That footfall can support nearby businesses and help to build a livelier, more welcoming town centre.

A temporary market keeps traders open

Existing traders will keep operating throughout the construction period. To make that possible, Kirklees Council has created a temporary market across Market Place, Longcauseway and Foundry Street. The council worked closely with traders to plan the relocation and allocate spaces. This approach helps ensure continuity of trade while work progresses on the main market site. Shoppers can keep visiting their favourite traders while the new market takes shape.

HBC Construction’s commitment to Dewsbury

Lee Powell, Managing Director of HBC Construction, said: “It’s always exciting to get the first spades in the ground and start bringing a project to life. A lot of work and planning goes into bringing developments to site, and we look forward to working closely with Kirklees Council and local partners to deliver a new anchor destination for Dewsbury.

“As with all our projects, we are committed to delivering wider social and economic benefits throughout construction. We have developed a strong social value and employment programme and are keen to leave a lasting legacy in Dewsbury, just as we have in other towns and communities across Yorkshire.”

With construction now under way, attention turns to delivering the Dewsbury Market redevelopment for its early 2028 completion. The finished scheme promises a restored landmark, a new public park and a stronger future for the town’s traders.
